Frequently Asked Questions

What is grief counseling?

Grief counseling is a supportive, therapeutic process that helps you navigate the emotional, physical, and relational changes that come with loss. A trained therapist offers tools, space, and guidance to help you understand your grief, express your emotions, and move toward healing at your own pace.

Do I need grief counseling?

You might benefit from grief counseling if your loss feels overwhelming, if daily life has become difficult, or if you feel stuck, isolated, or unsure how to cope. Grief support can help whether your loss is recent or something you’ve been carrying for years. There is no “right” reason to seek help—if you’re hurting, you deserve support.

How does grief counseling work?

Your therapist will work with you to understand your unique experience and goals. Sessions may include talking through emotions, learning coping tools, exploring the meaning of your loss, or finding ways to stay connected to your loved one. Therapy is always individualized—there is no one-size-fits-all approach.

hat happens during a session?

During a session, you’ll have a safe and compassionate space to share what you’re going through. Your therapist may guide you in reflection, offer grounding techniques, help you process painful emotions, or explore thoughts and memories connected to your loss. You set the pace, and your therapist walks beside you.

How long does grief therapy usually last?

Grief therapy looks different for everyone. Some people find relief in a few months, while others prefer longer-term support as they move through different stages of healing. Your therapist will help you determine the frequency and duration that best supports your needs.

Is grief counseling different from general therapy?

Yes. While general therapy addresses a wide range of emotional or relational concerns, grief counseling focuses specifically on the unique experience of loss—whether from death, divorce, illness, life transitions, or other significant changes. It is centered on honoring your connection, understanding your grief, and integrating the loss into your life.

Do you offer virtual appointments?

Yes. We offer both in-person and virtual sessions for individuals, couples, families, teens, and children across Washington. Virtual appointments make it easy to get care from the comfort of your home.

What types of loss do you support?

We support clients experiencing all forms of loss, including:

  • Death of a loved one
  • Miscarriage, stillbirth, or fertility struggles
  • Divorce or separation
  • Loss of health or mobility
  • Job loss or major life transitions
  • Trauma-related loss
  • Loss due to addiction or overdose

No loss is “too small” or “not enough.” If it matters to you, it matters to us.

How soon after a loss should someone start grief counseling?

There’s no perfect timing. Some people seek help immediately, while others come months or years later. If your emotions feel overwhelming, if you feel stuck, or if you simply want compassionate support as you process, it’s an appropriate time.
